Willow Lake, one of the two largest fresh water lakes in New York City, was formed out of eons old tidal salt marshes by Robert Moses when he created the park for the 1939 Worlds Fair. Years later, New York State declared  the Willow Lake area a State protected wetland. Around ten years ago the old wooden bridge over Flushing Creek at the south end of Willow Lake burned, making it necessary to limit access to the wetlands
